Eilenburg's City Hall

The citizens of Eilenburg began with the construction of their city hall in 1403, which at that time was still referred to as the "Department Store".  Sadly this building was destroyed more than once over the next several centuries.  It began in 1521 when this relatively new structure fell prey to the relentless flames of a terrible fire.  The city hall was rebuilt in the Renaissance style between 1544 and 45.  Several reconstructive projects followed as the centuries passed by, for example the disassembly and subsequent rebuilding of the city hall tower, whose staircase was repositioned from the inside of the tower to the outside.  Then between the 21st and 23rd of April, 1945 the city hall fell under a heavy artillery attack and burned to the ground.  Once again the structure had to be rebuilt and this was accomplished in the month of December, 1949.
After Germany's reunification approximately three million Marks were invested in the modernisation and refurbishment of the City Hall between 1991 and 96.  After the necessary renovations following the flood of the century in August, 2002 were completed, the Citizens' Advice Bureau was established in the building's mezzanine.
