Virtual Tour of the City
Do you belong to the group of 15 000 - 20 000 drivers daily zooming down the local bypass route on Highway 87? Then perhaps you might like to turn on your blinker, make a short detour, and take the opportunity to experience the city. Since its earliest beginnings it has been closely connected to the advantages of being located next to the river Mulde and consists of 3 major city districts (Middle, East, and Mount), reaching across six agrarian districts.
Bobritzer Damm, just south of Eilenburg, not only offers wonderful picnic areas but also turns the downtown into a small island due to the millrace diverging from the river Mulde. Here visitors will also discover the Marketplace and City Hall, the Nikolai church, a traditional tavern known as the Roter Hirsch , also home of the city's Museum, as well as a public park, including the small zoo.
The Castlemount with the Sorbentower is naturally located on the western side of town in the Mount city district. It already made quite the impression on the Brothers Grimm and became the scene for a story steeped in legend, in which the Heinzelmännchen cursed Eilenburg's nobility.
But there are more mysterious aspects to this city. The Eilenburger Mount is another one-of-a-kind, not found anywhere else in Europe, anomaly as it is perforated through-and-through with chamber-like caves, similar to a chunk of Swiss cheese! And the Ski-jump on the flat plains of Eilenburg is another attraction that cannot be found just anywhere.
The eastern district of the city is especially well-known for its local recreation opportunities and facilities as the Aquatic Centre and the manmade gravel pit lake spanning 50 hectares of land invite swimmers of all ages to test their waters (see
"Leisure & Culture - Pools/Baths"). The city's water tower, reaching an impressive 60 feet and earning the title of highest landmark in Eilenburg, was reconstructed in 2003 and naturally contributes a great deal to the many "wet elements" that seem to imbue the city.
So when will you be getting out of your car?
