Until the Reunification there were many large companies and enterprises in Eilenburg ranging from the chemical industry, mechanical engineering, furniture production, and confectionery production. After 1989 these factories and businesses experienced a dramatic drop in demand and were forced to let many labourers go. At the same time many small and mid-sized companies were established and new business locations were developed.
The largest branches today are in paper manufacturing, beverage production, plastics and chemical products manufacturing, as well as confectionery production.
